The symptoms of depression include feeling depressed mood (feeling sad, hopeless, empty) and loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities.
While those symptoms certainly are red flags, the truth is that depression doesn’t always look like debilitating sadness.
Some symptoms of depression can be far more subtle.
Emotional Outburst
Often people who are depressed show little emotional expression.
Other times, they show too much.
They can be suddenly irritable or explosive.
Anger, sadness, anxiety, and fear are just some of the emotions a person may have.
If a person who is usually flat with their feelings becomes hyperemotional, depression may be the cause.
Neglecting Self Care
Self-neglect can be a sign of depression and low self-esteem.
Get help for your depression and you'll likely begin to take care of yourself again.
Poor personal hygiene, poor household maintenance, unwillingness to take medication or treat illness or injury are all signs of depression.

Excessive Smoking
Smoking and depression is a vicious cycle.
Studies have suggested that smoking makes people more depressed, and depression makes people turn to smoking — smoking and depression may perpetuate each other.

Overspending
Research has shown that compulsive shopping behavior is often accompanied by depression, anxiety, and other negative emotions.
People affected by compulsive shopping disorder often report an uncomfortable tension that is relieved, at least temporarily, by shopping.
But "retail therapy" is a short-lived high because it doesn't address underlying depression.

Binge Eating
When someone's depressed it might trigger a period of binge eating.
A person might feel a sense of release or relief during a binge but experience feelings of shame or loss of control afterward.
Treating depression can help treat problems with eating and self-esteem, body image and mental health.

Excessive Gambling
People who gamble can relate to the idea that they get excited when they win and disappointed when they lose.
Many people use gambling as an escape from negative feelings and need to gamble to feel excitement.
When someone has a gambling problem, they may feel depressed, as well as shame and guilt.
Heavy Drinking
Alcohol use disorder and depression are two conditions that often occur together.
One can make the other worse in a cycle that's pervasive and problematic.
Treating both alcohol misuse and depression can make both conditions better.
As one improves, symptoms of the other improve, too.
Forgetfulness
Depression has been linked to memory problems, such as forgetfulness or confusion.
It can also make it difficult to focus on work or other tasks, make decisions, or think clearly.
Depression is associated with short-term memory loss.
Backpain
Body aches are a common symptom of depression, and research has shown that people with severe depression feel pain more intensely than others.
Depression itself can cause the kind of fatigue that prevents you from exercising which in turn puts added stresses on the joints and ligaments in your back.

Excessive internet use
People who spend a lot of time on the Internet are more likely to show depressive symptoms.
People who overuse the Internet tend to spend their time on pornography, online community, and game sites.
This type of addictive surfing can have a serious impact on mental health.
